Barbara Gowan is a multidisciplinary artist based on the Isle of Wight, UK. Her practice centres on intuitive mark making and experimentation in painting, mixed media, ceramic and digital art. Barbara’s work is held in private collections in Europe and the UK.

Biography

Barbara was brought up in London and studied History and English Literature at Keele University. She taught in East London, Brighton and Southampton for several years.

Facilitating children’s creativity re-ignited her own passion for art, which led to her devoting herself to the study of drawing, life drawing, painting, ceramics, and art history. In 1997, Barbara achieved an Access to Art and Design Diploma at East Essex College.

She continued her art journey while raising two sons, continually developing her visual language and artistic identity. Barbara has been selected for multiple national open exhibitions, artist residencies and public engagement projects. She taught ceramics at Quay Arts Centre, Isle of Wight, 2017- 2023, and from her home studio until 2025. Since 2021, Barbara has been an active member of The Ryde Art Collective, a dynamic group of Isle of Wight contemporary artists.

Barbara used this opportunity to deepen her understanding of what paint can do. She experimented with painting on the window itself, which culminated in the finale performance at the end of the residency, as in photograph above.

Artist’s Statement

Barbara’s work is informed by life experiences and the world around her. She explores themes of trauma, memory and empowerment. Her practice centres on intuitive mark making and experimentation. She makes abstract paintings, mixed media, ceramic and digital art. Reclaimed surfaces and media are used when possible. In the series, “Machine Parts”, Barbara takes inspiration from redundant pieces of technology, such as electrical equipment, used packaging, or ephemera. She is fascinated by the paradox that the technology designed to make our lives “easier”, is contributing to our possible extinction and the destruction of all life on earth.

The recent series, titled “Proof”, is concerned with a reductionist approach and materiality. The work features lines of soft charcoal and broad brushwork. Canvases are placed on the floor. Barbara explores the space with her body, allowing the charcoal and paintbrush to take over. The process is a celebration of the moment. Traumatic experiences have affected the artist’s memory, and she lives in a state of forgetfulness. Making art is an act of proof that she existed, at that time with those materials. It brings her back to herself, to a place of safety and creative possibility.
